About Port Douglas Australia

The charming village of Port Douglas is located 60km north of Cairns International Airport, in Tropical North Queensland Australia.  The drive north from Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway has fantastic coastal scenery.

Port Douglas is the nearest mainland town to the Great Barrier Reef and the world heritage rainforests of the Daintree and Cape Tribulation are at your doorstep making this a popular vacation destination for both Australian and overseas visitors.

Getting to Port Douglas

Within Australia, Qantas offers daily flights to Cairns from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Townsville, Ayers Rock, Darwin and Hamilton Island.  Flights from other cities go via these cities. Virgin Blue offers daily flights to Cairns from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, with connections from other cities via these points. 

Queensland Rail has 2 trains which travel from Brisbane to Cairns five times per week. The Sunlander has seats and berths and takes 31 hours. The Tilt Train only offers business class seats and takes 25 hours.

There are numerous ways to travel from Cairns International or Domestic Airports north to Port Douglas.  Hire a car, take a shuttle bus, take a taxi or limousine [from International][from Domestic]. 

If you have your own car or a hire car, simply head north from Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway then turn right into Port Douglas road when you see the large road sign.

Banks / Currency Exchange

There are six banks in Port Douglas all with automatic teller machines.  EFTPOS is available at the supermarkets.  

Australian currency comes in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins and $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 notes. Most restaurants, hotels and shops will accept traveller's cheques and the electronic credit card/debit card facility is widely available.

Currency Exchange is available at most banks and at Inforex at Marina Mirage.

Weather

You will find that no matter when you visit Tropical North Queensland, the weather will be warm.  In the cooler months (June - October) temperatures range from an average overnight low of 17°C to a high of 29°C.  During the remainder of the year the temperatures range from 19°C to 32°C.

Because of the warm weather, locals tend to dress casually for comfort. You can leave your jackets or ties at home!
